Summer Internships

The Summer Internship Program provides new students with an opportunity to begin their graduate research at Penn State in the summer, free from the distractions of course work or teaching. These internships are arranged by consent of individual faculty and students. While there is no obligation to continue the student/mentor relationship at the end of the summer, students who remain with the same research group benefit most from the program, because it accelerates their progress toward the Ph.D. The stipend is equivalent to a twelve-week graduate research assistantship . Funding for the program is provided by individual faculty research grants and a special grant from the Eberly College of Science. Interested students should contact faculty directly (see research descriptions on individual faculty web pages).

Other Research Opportunities

Here are some summer internship opportunities in various Johnson and Johnson facilities throughout the country.

  • Penn State Biomaterials and Bionanotechnology Summer Institute (PSU-BBSI)

The BBSI is a summer research opportunity for students who have completed their sophomore year and have not yet begun     their second year of graduate work. The BBSI is collaborative effort between the departments of Bioengineering, Chemistry, and Hershey Medical Center and will provide unique interdisciplinary training in the rapidly growing fields of Biomaterials and Bionanotechnology, areas where Penn State has particular strengths. Students will engage in two consecutive summers of research and participate in a summer course and workshops. Students will receive a stipend and housing and travel allowances. Those interested in finding out more about the PSU-BBSI should visit the web site at http://www.bbsi.psu.edu or contact Peter Butler at pbutler@psu.edu.
