To apply to the Chemistry graduate program for fall 2010 admissions, please complete the following listed below. We do not admit students for spring.

The Department of Chemistry reviews the applications that are submitted from this web site and makes admission decisions on all completed files.

IF your application is accepted, you will be notified and then asked to fill out the Penn State Grad School application - do not fill this out until you receive an admission offer from the Department of Chemistry.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT APPLICATION (ALL materials listed below are REQUIRED and must be received by FRIDAY DEC 18, 2009):


1.  Create a Friends of Penn State Digital Identity, complete this only once and remember
      it so you can log-back into the system.

2.  Chemistry Department Application (You are to use your PSU Friends account when
     completing the Chemistry Dept. Application)

3.  Three Letters of Recommendation will be requested on line while filling out the Chemistry
     Department Application

4.  Official Undergraduate Transcript - one original copy  / Official Graduate Transcript,
      if applicable
- one original copy 

5.  GRE (Graduate Record Examination) General test scores and Subject test score (BOTH
     SCORES REQUIRED).  The subject score can be in either Chemistry, Biochemistry
     or Physics.

6.  TOEFL (paper based or computer based) AND TSE score should be submitted together OR
     if you have taken the new TOEFL iBT (internet based) test, we only need the TOEFL iBT
     score sheet.

7.  Please assemble transcript(s), GRE/Subject scores, TOEFL and TSE or iBT materials and
     mail them directly to:

Additional Information for STUDENTS:


If your application is accepted, you will be asked to fill out the Penn State Grad School application -
do not fill this out until you receive an admission offer from the Department of Chemistry.

Please do not send extra materials (i.e. publications, vitae) with your application. They will not be included in the materials viewed by the Admissions Committee. 

One official transcript from all institutions of higher education attended, both undergraduate and graduate. International applicants must submit official or attested university records, with certified translations if the records are not in English. Notarized copies are not sufficient, use the appropriate form above.

GRE General Scores and Subject Score (BOTH REQUIRED):  Minimum overall general score - 1200.   Institution Code: 2660, Department Code: 0301.   The following GRE subject tests are acceptable:   chemistry, biochemistry or physics. Institution Code: 2660.

TOEFL Score and TSE (BOTH required together) if you did not receive your B.S./B.A. from an U.S. Institution).  If you do not have the new TOEFL iBT score, we require both the old TOEFL (paper or computer) AND a TSE score.  If you received your MS degree from within the US, the degree MUST be conferred in order to be exempted from a TOEFL/TSE/IBT.   Minimum TOEFL score for consideration is 620 along with a TSE score of 45. TOEFL iBT Score (did not receive your B.S./B.A. from an U.S. Institution). Minimum overall score for consideration is 100 with a speaking minimum score of 23.  Institution Code: 2660, Department Code: Chemistry 62.

NOTE: International applicants are exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement who have received a baccalaureate or a masters degree from a college/ university/institution in any of the following: Australia, Belize, British Caribbean and British West Indies, Canada (except Quebec), England, Guyana, Republic of Ireland, Liberia, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Scotland, the United States and Wales.
